Chaumet 1970s 18k Gold and Diamond Ear Clips
In the 1970s, Chaumet, hired jewelers Pierre Sterle and Rene Morin to design pieces that were modern and completely groundbreaking. This “new look” involved beautiful goldsmithing and the sparing use of diamonds to make the pieces more accessible and contemporary.
This jewelry was sold at “The Arcade” which was a new style in exhibiting and retailing jewelry. Jewelry was displayed on screens while “musique concrete” played and models presented the ways in which the pieces could be worn. It was a very up close and personal way of selling jewelry that broke from the tradition of discretion and distance.
These earrings are asymmetrical and the bottom “drop” moves independently from the top part that attaches to the ear. The gold is gently twisted and goldsmithed to effect golden water running over pebbles in a stream. The shadows create a fantastical movement superimposed over the irregular and charming shape. Two small patches of diamonds accent the ear clip: one in the part over the ear and another triangular area in the dangle.
