Cartier London Art Deco Aquamarine and Diamond Ring, circa 1935
The London branch of Cartier was helmed by Jacques Cartier who served as the firm’s gemstone expert and was known for his artist’s eye. Under his direction, the Cartier London workshop was recognized for its original designs and the consistently high quality of its craftsmanship. Throughout the 1920s and 30s the workshop developed a distinct stylistic identity, separate from Paris and New York, and one sought after by those clients seeking unique jewels.
Jacques was particularly fond of pairing aquamarines with diamonds. He thought the combination created a look that was both fresh and elegant, eminently suitable for independent-minded women of the era.
In this ring the large step-cut aquamarine is enhanced by graduated lines of baguette-cut diamonds in a pyramid form, creating a bold, architectural statement ring that draws attention to the hand.
