Nicholas Varney Blue Tourmaline Gion Ring

Master jeweler Nicholas Varney is drawn to contrasts – rare gemstones mixed with humble materials, organic shapes offset by geometric forms and symmetry paired with surprise. Throughout his career he has created bold and exuberant jewelry inspired by his love of travel and his affinity for the natural world.

Varney’s Gion ring is named after Kyoto’s most famous Geisha district. It centers on a Sterling Blue tourmaline weighing approximately 4.6 carats, trimmed with petrified palm wood and set in a pierced gold “cloud motif” bowl that is pavé-set with 2.26 carats of full-cut aquamarines. The warm wood tones surround the icy blue surface of the tourmaline highlighting its natural saturated color. Varney’s art is on full display as he creates the perfect balance between his singular design and his unique mix of materials.
