Bulgari Ancient Coin Monete Ring
Over the ages, populations have been fascinated with their coins as a form of value but also as an important statement of who they are. How kingdoms, empires and countries choose to design their coins, and leaders they decide to feature, says much about the population itself.
Bulgari started using coins in its jewelry designs in the mid-1960s which represented a revival of an ancient Roman practice dating back to the 3rd century. Over the decades, coins featured in Monete creations have spanned a vast timeline and geography — from the Greek colonies of Magna Graecia and the reign of Alexander the Great to the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, the British Empire and even 20th century America.
Coins offered Bulgari a way to celebrate their Roman beginnings and to play with creative ways of setting the coins as one would do with a gemstone. The Monete collections were meant to be worn all the time, not just for night. The vast number of beautiful creations using these coins is unfathomable and have become iconic emblems of Bulgari.
Our Monete ring has a pleasing 18k yellow gold tapering band set with an ancient Greek coin dating to circa 325-275 BC featuring an extraordinarily clear and raised image of a man’s head. The other side of the coin, which is visible in the open setting, shows a dolphin, barley grain and a mussel shell. The ring itself is inscribed “CAMPANIA-PHISTELIA” on one semi-circle and “4ème siècle..” on the other, both on the underside of the ring around the coin.
