Rene Boivin Emerald, Diamond and Rock Crystal Ear Clips Circa 1930
These striking Boivin ear clips exemplify the House’s inventive approach to design and its masterful use of unconventional materials. Each ear clips is composed of a bold, circular form outlined in brilliant-cut diamonds, with a sculptural interior of carved rock crystal punctuated by a vivid green emerald cabochon accented with a single diamond. The crystal is carved so that the perfectly transparent outside appears to be dipped in diamonds while the interior is cut at an angle to reveal a crescent of softly clouded the crystal. The interplay of transparent and diaphanous crystal, polished surfaces, and bright diamonds creates an intriguing sense of depth, while the asymmetric placement of the emerald lends a distinctly modernist character to the design.
Rock crystal held a special place in the vocabulary of the House which embraced the material for its extraordinary clarity and its ability to be carved into sculptural forms. Rather than treating it simply as a setting for precious gemstones, the House frequently employed rock crystal as an important design element in its own right; exploiting its transparency, volume and subtle reflection of light.
These ear clips embody the understated elegance, sculptural design and bold use of color that distinguishes the House of Boivin.
