Verdura “Six Blades” Aquamarine and Diamond Ring
This ring is a “Blades” ring set with a cushion-cut aquamarine of approximately 20 carats held within the sculptural six-blade mounting, the blade-form shoulders pave-set with diamonds. This setting was created by Verdura to create an architectural play of light and volume for large consequential gemstones which demanded a design equal to their quality and presence.
The “Blades” setting first appeared in the late 1950s, squarely in the mid-20th century modernist movement. Jewelry designers generally were rejecting filigree and fuss, heavy bezels and hidden mechanics. Verdura was influenced by architecture and armature (support as design), sculpture (negative space mattered), and a post-war appetite for bold confident forms. Rather than disappear, the setting becomes a visible beautiful structure, a deliberate frame for the gemstone chosen first.
This aquamarine is the color of the ocean and perfectly clean to the naked eye. The stone is cut to bring out the stronger blue. The finish is crisp with a high-quality finish. These are characteristics of the finest aquamarine gemstones.
Verdura is currently not making any “blades” rings. They are only available as vintage treasures, like this one.
